Dress & Etiquette

Kimonos & How to Dress

着物

Etiquette traditionally requires wearing a kimono, but in our Workshop this is not required. You are very welcome to attend in your everyday clothes. If you do choose to wear a kimono, however, it can only enrich your experience — and afterwards you can wander through the streets of Kyoto, do some shopping, and draw the admiration of the locals.

Do I need to wear a kimono?

Etiquette traditionally requires wearing a kimono, but in our Workshop this is not required. You are very welcome to attend in your everyday clothes. However, wearing a kimono can only enrich your experience of the Japanese tea ceremony — and afterwards you can wander through the streets of Kyoto in your kimono, do some shopping, and draw the admiration of the locals.

女性

Ladies — Kimono

Ladies wear a kimono. Styles tend to be very floral and colourful for younger women, and more plain with subtle designs for more mature women. Undergarments are required and assistance in wearing is provided by the rental shop.

男性

Gentlemen — Hakama

Men wear a hakama — usually plain but elegant. The hakama differs from a kimono in that the lower part is shaped as baggy trousers. Undergarments are also required and assistance is provided at the rental shop.

Renting a Kimono — Yumeyakata

If you choose to attend in a kimono, you can rent one from our partner Yumeyakata. When booking, mention that you are attending the Ju-An tea ceremony at your appointed time so they can fit you in at the right moment. The kimono shop is a five-minute walk from us. Children's kimonos are also available. Arrive at Yumeyakata 90 minutes before your tea ceremony appointment

Yours for the Whole Day

You hire the kimono for the entire day. Simply arrive at Yumeyakata in your travelling clothes and change at the shop, leaving your clothes securely in a locker. The staff will guide you through a selection of kimono patterns to choose from, dress you, and even arrange your hair. You can then walk about Kyoto all day and return to the shop in the evening to change back.
